Commissioner Expresses Concern With Canada Border Services Policy

Canada’s Privacy Commissioner is calling for an independent audit of Canada Border Services policy that allows officers to search private cell phones, tablets and laptops.

The Commissioner says their office looked into six complaints and found Canada Customs violated the Privacy Act in each one.

The Commissioner has made several recommendations for improvement, including mandatory training for officers, stronger monitoring of compliance and improved reporting.

Canada Customs says it has since developed a new policy addressing the Commissioner’s concerns.
