Area farmers are being encouraged to get rid of their unwanted agricultural pesticides in a safe manner.
The group Cleanfarms is sponsoring a collection program in the Rainy River district.
It’s at Emo Feeds and started Monday and will run through to September 20.
Spokesperson Christine Lajeunesse says it’s an inexpensive option for farmers in the position with unwanted or obsolete pesticides or livestock medications.
“If they want to get rid of them safely by contacting a waste hauler it’s going to cost them a lot of money. That’s why we organized this collection. It’s free charge for farmers,” says Lajeunesse.
A variety of materials will be accepted.
“We accept all of the unwanted agricultural pesticides. Those are pesticides that are defined with the pest control number on the label. We also accept livestock/equine medication,” says Lajeunesse.
The depot will also accept pesticides from golf courses and industry and commercial pest control products.
Fertilizer, needles, aerosol cans, and household waste will not be taken.
This is the first time Cleanfarms has been able to hold a collection depot in the Emo area. A similar one is taking place in the Thunder Bay area at the Slate River Co-op.
