Winter Storm Cancels School Buses, Closes Roads, Leaves Several In the Dark

The first significant snowfall of the season continues.

Environment Canada says we can expect another two centimetres of snow by the end of the day.

The snow is expected to slowly taper to flurries by the afternoon.

Hydro One crews are still dealing with several power outages within the Rainy River District.

Almost 800 Hydro One customers lost power last night due to the winter storm and its strong winds.

Almost half of them were in the Bears Pass, Nickle Lake and Reef Point area.

Areas in and around Nestor Falls, Clearwater Lake, Naicatchewenin, Seine River, Mine Centre and Nigigoonsiminikaaning were also left in the dark.

Hydro One says it should have power fully restored later this morning.

The snowy conditions and blowing snow are still causing travel headaches in the region.

Highway 11 from Fort Frances to Shabaqua remains closed.

It was shut down earlier last night.

Highway 17 from the Manitoba Border to Sistonen’s Corners near Thunder Bay also remains closed this morning.

It has been closed since yesterday morning.

Highway 71 and 502 also remain closed this morning.

Poor road conditions are impacting school buses this morning.

Several buses are cancelled, including all Dimit and First Student runs.
