Voyageurs National Park is temporarily closing certain areas around bald eagle nesting sites.
Three of the sites are in the Kabetogama Lake area.
· Happy Landing Campsite (K-11)
· Camelback Island Campsite (K-3)
· Yoder Island Houseboat Site (K-37)
The other is at Namakan Lake.
· Junction Bay North Houseboat Site (N-50)
Since 1992, the park has temporarily closed the land and water areas around active bald eagle nests during critical nesting periods. Some eagle pairs nest in late March or early April. Others may not initiate nesting until late April or early May.
The sites are often closed until the young eagles leave, usually in late July.
The closed areas are marked with signs and buoys.
Park officials ask both motorized and non-motorized watercraft users to stay at least 200 meters from nests where bald eagles are actively nesting during the closure period.
