Video Evidence To Be Made Admissible

The provincial government is paving the way for schools buses to have cameras to catch motorists who don’t stop when the red lights are flashing.

New legislation will make video from those cameras admissible in court with the need of a witness.

Transportation Minister Jeff Yurek says this avoided bus drivers having to take time off work to testify.

“You no longer have to have the driver going to court, taking a day off work to go testify that so and so blue by the bus. You can actually use the camera,” says Yurek.

There will also be some added fines that can be levied against offending drivers.

Yurek says it’s estimated that there are some 17,000 incidents every day across Ontario of motorists blowing past a stopped school bus with their lights flashing as it’s picking up or dropping off children.

The legislation still leaves the onus on school bus companies and school board to install the cameras pegged to cost between $1-2-thousand.

Yurek says bus companies are still itching to install the cameras.
