The province is looking at some of the challenges and opportunities in the transportation section for the region.
Ontario unveiled on Friday thirteen members of a Northern Ontario Transportation Task Force, including Sioux Lookout Mayor Doug Lawrance, Kenora Mayor Dan Reynard and Grand Chief of Treaty #3, Francis Kavanaugh.
“Getting the North moving is a top priority for our government,” says Greg Rickford, Minister of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry. “Establishing the Northern Task Force is another critical step in our government’s plan to build a better transportation network for northern Ontarians. We are committed to improving transportation and infrastructure to support a stronger economy for the North.”
The group will look at ways to make it easier for people and goods to travel, while boosting economic growth in the North.
“I am honoured to be included and co-lead the Northern Task Force and look forward to collaborating with government and other representatives as we work to improve the safety of our highways,” says Shuniah Mayor Wendy Landry, who also serves as the President of the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA).
The task force was one of 60 action plans set out in the draft transportation plan for northern Ontario.
The group will have their first meeting on Thursday, January 27.
