There are now three student trustees with the Rainy River District School Board.
Rainy River High School’s Addison Brown joins as the board’s First Nation, Metis and Inuit Student Trustee.
Board Chair Kathryn Pierroz says it is a first for the board.
“Addison’s appointment is a significant milestone that reflects the board’s commitment to Indigenous education, representation of student voice, and our ongoing work in reconciliation,” says Pierroz.
“We look forward to the positive impact that all three will make as advocates for all students as we move forward into the new school year.”
Brown joins fellow Student Trustees Branwyn Minor from Atikokan’s Northern Lakes School, who is also starting her first term, and Isabelle Meeks from Fort Frances High School who is returning for her second year.
Trustees approved in March the creation of the First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Student Trustee and the decision to increase the number of Student Trustees from two to three.
Student Trustees are elected or acclaimed through school elections for a two-year term, with the board’s three high schools rotating in providing an appointment each year.
This is the first time all three schools are represented at the board table at the same time.
