Nate Leipciger has received Ontario’s highest civilian honour.

The 97-year-old Holocaust survivor was recently named to the Order of Ontario

In a media release, the province says that Nate “has spent over five decades combating hatred and promoting civic responsibility.”

After surviving Nazi Germany’s genocidal regime, including incarceration at Auschwitz, Nate immigrated to Canada and built an electrical engineering business, which saw him help construct hospitals throughout the Rainy River District.

Last year, he returned to Fort Frances for a series of talks about his life, experiences and the importance of combating all types of extremism.

The first night, which was a free presentation at the Townshend Theatre, saw the venue packed with over 400 people, with organizers having to turn some people away.

Therefore one of Nate’s subsequent talks at a local school was opened up to the public so others could attend.

Nate was brought to Fort Frances by a group of locals led by Ben Mast, a local Christian pastor. The two met in Poland in April at the 2025 March of the Living commemoration.

The province says his life’s work “advances justice and remembrance,” and has also included co-founding Toronto’s first Holocaust Museum, working on global education initiatives, giving speeches and releasing his memoir “The Weight of Freedom”.

Nate has also been named to the Order of Canada.

It’s Definitely…. Something Good!
