School expansion forces need for former school

Some students at St. Mary School in Fort Frances are starting their new school year in a different building.

They are occupying classes at the former St. Francis School, located next door.

Jackie Robinson, Director of Education for the Northwest Catholic District School Board, says it was necessary because of the construction to add three new classrooms to St. Mary School.

“Because of the construction and the removal of the old wall where the new construction pieces are going, we did have to move some of those classes into the old building to just ensure their safety, as well limit the disruption from noise and contractors,” says Robinson.

Students in some of the primary classes were moved.

“We were a little bit delayed in getting the project started with the Ministry (of Education) being a pilot project. We are one of the first boards in the entire province to be given this opportunity for this modular project. Once the construction started and the foundation pieces got into place, the construction is going along very quickly.”

Robinson says the hope is to have the primary students back at St. Mary in the new year.
