Federal Conservative leader Andrew Scheer is stepping down.
Scheer made the announcement in the House of Commons yesterday morning. He says he’s making the move for the good of the party.
“In order to chart the course ahead, this party and this movement need someone who can give 100% to the effort. After some conversations with my kids and loved ones, I felt it was time to put my family first,” says Scheer.
There had been many within the party who wanted him to step down, in the face of losing the October election to Justin Trudeau.
The resignation of Scheer is of no surprise to one northwestern Ontario provincial party official.
Derek Parks believes during the election Scheer was not able to present a vision of Canada that voters wanted.
He says if you are not able to get that support it is time for someone else to try adding “Conservatives have to make sure that vision resonates with the majority of Canadians so they get a chance to govern again.”
Parks says there are a number of rumoured potential replacements in the wings.
They include Candice Bergen, Peter MacKay, and Michelle Rempel.
