At the recommendation of the mayor, Fort Frances town council is delaying a vote on changing the name of Colonization Road to a future meeting.
Councillor Doug Judson wanted an ad hoc committee formed.
Mayor June Caul feels the discussion needs to start at their existing committee levels.
“The committees can then make a recommendation to council once they have fully considered all aspects and affects this will have on the future for everyone in our community and neighbouring communities,” says Caul.
Judson is accepting of the decision.
“I’m not opposed to the suggestion. I do think that there is a benefit to focussing the effort to research this through an ad hoc committee,” says Judson.
Caul puts no timeframe as to when a recommendation would come back to council, leaving that up to the Planning and Development and Operations and Facilities Committees to decide.
She says with attention now on the pandemic and the upcoming budget, maybe it’s best to wait until later in the new year to begin the discussion.
Judson later issuing a release stating Monday night’s decision doesn’t preclude him or any other council member from bringing a resolution forward to our next meeting.
He does feel bringing the issue to the executive committees can develop a proper timeline and process toward changing the name.
