Renewed Talk About Parking Meters

Parking meters are being talked about again in Fort Frances.

The discussion occurred this week during town council’s Planning and Development Executive Committee.

Councillor Wendy Brunetta says it may be worth a look.

“I just know that we’re looking for other sources of revenue. If we had a report telling us how much on average we could recoup, it might give it a little more weight, in my mind,” says Brunetta.

It’s not the first time parking meters have been raised. It’s come up several times in the last twenty years.

The last time was in 2016. Council then looked at parking meters as a solution to dealing with parking complaints in the downtown area.

The issue drew plenty of opposition from the business community and the general public, leading council to drop the subject.

Chief Administrative Officer Doug Brown admits it’s a political hot potato, but one that’s in the hands of town council to decide.

“I don’t want to see administration waste any energy or time if there’s no political will. We do have a report that can be passed on quite easily,” says Brown.

Administration does intend to dust off previous studies for council to review.
