Municipal reps from the Rainy River district continue to seek more tax dollars from CN.
Another resolution calling for railway taxes in Ontario to be determined on a per tonne-per mile basis was approved at the Rainy River District Municipal Association’s weekend meeting.
It’s similar to a resolution passed last year.
Some wording was tweaked.
It also includes a passage that railway taxes based on a per tonne-mile would help reduce the financial pressures faced, especially during the pandemic and the economic recovery of the province.
Railway taxes are set by the province and based on acreage. It was last adjusted in 2018 after lobbying headed by the town of Fort Frances.
The resolution is now heading to the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association for broader support. It will also go to the Premier, the Minister of Finance, local MPPs and other municipal lobby groups.
