Positivity Rate Drops Again

The Northwestern Health Unit is reporting 249 active high-risk cases of COVID-19 in the region.

There are also two active outbreaks, including one in a hospital and one listed as ‘other’.

The current 7-day percent positivity rate is 19.2%.

Meanwhile, the region’s top doctor does not believe our region has peaked when it comes to the Omicron variant.

“We currently have a very high percent positivity rate when compared to other areas in the region,” says Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon. “This means that although Ontario is reporting that Omicron is likely cresting in the province as a whole, it is likely that it is still spreading rapidly in our communities.”

Dr. Young Hoon notes the NWHU catchment area saw Omicron cases much later compared to the rest of the province.

When it comes to vaccination, Dr. Young Hoon says there’s been a high uptake when it comes to the younger age group.

“Over 61 per cent of children aged 5-11 have now had their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Thank you to the parents who have decided to get their children vaccinated. You’re helping keep our communities safe. For those who are still unsure, I want to recommend the SickKids vaccine consult service.”

For those aged 12 and older, 95 per cent in our region have two doses and 53.5 per cent have their third shot.

Dr. Young Hoon also encourages those eligible to get a booster dose to do so to increase protection and help prevent getting severe symptoms of the virus.

More data on hospitalizations, cases and vaccination can be found on the NWHU website.
