Pop-Up Prom Takes Place This Saturday

The graduating class at Fort Frances High School will get the prom they didn’t get before graduation.

A group of parents and students have come together to organize an event at Point Park and Sorting Gap Marina for this Saturday.

They are calling it an Around the World Pop-up Prom.

The provincial lockdown prevented a prom in June from going ahead.

Parent Billie Dittaro says the students are deserving of it.

“They are a group of kids that went into a school year and had nothing. When I say nothing, they had no clubs. They had no hockey. They had no sports. They had nothing. They were in and out of school. So we felt it was important for these kids to shine a little bit,” says Dittaro.

The event will include various themed sites for photographs, a mini Grand March along the waterfront, a visit to Rainycrest, followed by dinner catered by the Flint House.

Dittaro says they reached out to the community for support and were overwhelmed by the response.

“We’re very overwhelmed with the support from sponsors and local businesses. This really couldn’t have been possible without the support of the community, including parents, grandparents.”

As many as sixty students are expected.

The province’s move to Stage Three does help the prom go forward.

Dittaro says public health guidelines will be followed

She adds if there’s a student that was missed, they can still take part.

“If there’s a student out there that listens to this and then wants to get in on it, they can either call me or they can look up the Facebook group, FFHS Prom 2021, and they could send a request to that.”

Residents can watch the mini Grand March along the waterfront. It begins at 5:30 p.m.
