Pool in Fort Frances now closed. Cyclones seek help

The pool at the Memorial Sports Centre in Fort Frances closes down as of today.

It is only a temporary move to correct an issue with the pool deck.

The pool is scheduled to reopen on September 23rd.

Meantime, the Cyclone Swim Club is seeking financial help from the town of Fort Frances to recover from the lengthy closure last winter.

In a letter to town council, Club officials say they were impacted by the lengthy closure last season caused by an extensive renovation.

The club was able to find time at the pool in International Falls but a lack of availability forced it to issue refunds to its non-competitive swimmers.

The Club would now like some help in rebuilding its coffers.

Officials note that their fees amount to between $20,000-$30,000 a season with additional costs for lifeguards.

“The fees are becoming unsustainable for families to maintain and are being reflected in our enrollment,” says club writes in the letter.

“The Cyclones also have the largest regional pool costs – and this was for a pool that was in disrepair and unsafe to continue programming in.”

Club officials are asking for an in-kind sponsorship equal to the ir pool rental time between September and next June.

They also ask that the town evaluate fees and bring them in line with other regional facilities.

The letter comes before town council at their meeting tonight.
