Operation Dry Water Underway

Law enforcement in Minnesota taking a no excuses approach to those who operate a boat while under the influence.

A campaign called Operation Dry Water kicks off today on state waters.

Department of Natural Resources Lieutenant Adam Block says boaters can expect see more law enforcement this weekend.

“There won’t be any warnings. If you’re operating a boat under the influence, you will be arrested and taken to jail. It’s certainly not something we want to do, but we’d rather arrest someone then have to tell their family or the family of an innocent victim that they’re never coming home,” says Block.

The Department notes alcohol was a factor in about half of all boating accidents in Minnesota last year.

Block adds boaters and drivers in Minnesota should take note of new legislation impacting those who are caught impaired.

“Minnesota’s boating while intoxicated laws are among the strongest in the nation. Operating a boat with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 is against the law. Anyone convicted of drinking and driving, whether they’re driving a boat, motor vehicle or recreational vehicle lose their privilege to operate any of them,” says Block.

The penalties for a first-time offender includes potential jail time and the loss of their license for up to a year.

“The bottom line is this. Boating is drunk driving. If you’re going to drink make sure have lined up a sober driver on the boat and from the way home,” says Block.
