NDP Promote Need For Tourism Tax Incentive

Ontario’s NDP wants an incentive to encourage domestic tourism.

They are renewing calls for a credit to cover up to one thousand dollars in costs for things like accommodations, gas, and souvenirs.

Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates first proposed the idea in a private member’s bill last year.

“Tourism is such an important driver in the province of Ontario, and there is no economic recovery without tourism in the province of Ontario,” explains Gates. “We believe the $1,000 tax credit is the way to go to get working families to take a vacation.”

A 20 percent tax credit was proposed by the Ford government. NDP leader Andrea Horwath says that won’t go into effect until 2022.

“Just shows he (Doug Ford) has other priorities. He would rather save money than save people, everyday people, some money and get our economy back up and running,” says Horwath.

The NDP has not costed out its proposal, but the provincial incentive was pegged at 150-million dollars.
