Mayor questions DSSAB costs

The mayor of Emo sees his community having to end its association with the Rainy River District Social Services Board in the near future.

Harold McQuaker is vocal about the municipal costs afforded to DSSAB.

He believes the township might be able to do better.

“We are going to have to pull away from DSSAB. We’re going to have to quit them,” says McQuaker.

“We have to take over our portion of social services. I’m sure we will be a lot less money if we police it the way it should be policed than what is costing us right now.”

Municipalities saw their share rise 4.8 per cent this year, in part due to rising costs associated with community housing.

McQuaker also questions the amount of money Emo contributed to the DSSAB to operate the warming centre in Fort Frances.

Harold McQuaker says maybe a restructuring is in order.

“I think DSSAB is just out of control, and if one municipality put them on notice and started shutting them down, I think they’d revamp and come back and probably start doing things the proper way.”
