Local Residents Urged To Be A Donor

The Trillium Gift of Life is asking you to take a couple of minutes the next couple of days and register your consent to be a tissue or organ donor.

April is ‘Be A Donor Month.’

Executive Lead Versha Prakash would like to see a boost in numbers.

“We all need to step up and be part of the solution. In Ontario, only 35% of the population has registered. We know we can do better,” says Prakash.

Prakash says northern Ontario leads in the way in the province.

Fort Frances heads all northwestern Ontario communities with 56 per cent of 56 per cent of health card holders registering consent.

It reaches 49 per cent when combining all other district communities other than Fort Frances.

There are currently more than 1,500 people in Ontario waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.

Prakash notes every three days someone dies waiting for a transplant.

She stresses one donor has the potential to save as many as 8 lives and enhance as many as 75 lives through the gift of tissue.

“One way of helping and giving hope to our fellow Ontarians that need an organ transplant is by registering consent to donate. It’s very easy to do. It takes two minutes to go online at Be A Donor.”
