Increased Focus on Traffic Taken

Some increased focus on traffic safety in the Rainy River District.

OPP have assigned an officer to a three-month position.

Detachment Commander Inspector Nathan Schmidt says they have identified some specific areas of attention.

“Some are the mine traffic. Some are the after 4 p.m. traffic to the east side. We sort of scheduled his schedule to meet those demands,” says Schmidt.

That means working varied shifts.

“Some days, he’s out extremely early in the morning to catch the mine traffic. Other times he scheduled for late evenings working on things like RIDE looking for impaired drivers.”

Schmidt says the three months will help determine what impact it’s having.

“We will see what the results are in and see the impacts it does have. That gives us the chance to also look at our stafing levels come the spring and determine whether we could afford to continue to run that program.”
