A flag recognizing World Autism Awareness Day is flying at the Fort Frances Civic Centre.
It is raising to recognize April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day.
The day aims to raise awareness about autistic individuals and the organizations that provide support.
Mayor Andrew Hallikas says the flag-raising was at the request of Autism Ontario, which he says has a long history in the province.
“Autism in Ontario is a wonderful organization. They’ve been in existence since 1973 and for over 50 years have been serving Fort Francis residents and their families who are on the autism spectrum,” says Hallikas.
Hallikas also read a proclamation that notes autism affects more than 135,000 individuals in Ontario, representing one in every 50 children and youth.
“We urge everyone to recognize and celebrate the unique differences and needs of others, fostering an inclusive environment where all individuals can participate fully in activities and discussions,” the proclamation reads.
