Forest Fire Threat Continues to Diminish

The forest fire hazard in northwestern Ontario is staying in the low range.

There are still fifty-five active fires.

Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s Fire Information Officer, Chris Marchand, says no fires are causing any great concern.

” We have no fires with the status of ‘not under control, which is something we really haven’t seen since May,” says Marchand.

He says the recent wet weather and cooler temperatures have done a lot to temper the fire situation.

“If it keeps raining and in widespread, significant ways, we can expect to see that active fire list some down some more. That’s sort of what we are hoping to see over the next couple of weeks.”

Four fires are still burning within Quetico Provincial Park.

Marchand says two of them were downgraded recently and are now being allowed to burn themselves out.

Some of the other major blazes this summer are also causing no problems.

Marchand notes the threat of any new fires is also diminishing.

“As always, it depends on the weather, but we’re into sort of a more seasonal trend away from the summer heatwave situation that really escalated our fire situation.
