Five New Forest Fires In NWO

Some increased forest fire activity in northwestern Ontario.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says there were five new starts on Tuesday.

One of the largest blazes was near Balmer Creek, near Balmertown, which reached 15 and a half hectares and required ground crews and a waterbomber to keep it from spreading further.

The others were smaller fires;

  • Sioux Lookout 2 is out at 0.1 ha., located near Walton Lake, approximately 20 kilometres east of Sioux Lookout.
  • Red Lake 5 is being held at 0.1 ha., located near Pikangikum, approximately 90 kilometres north of Red Lake.
  • Dryden 11 is out at 0.1 ha., located near McEwen Lake, approximately 143 kilometres northeast of Ignace.
  • Nipigon 1 is out at 0.5 ha., located near Hardrock Creek in Geraldton.

The fire hazard is currently low to moderate, with pockets of high hazard in the Dryden, Thunder Bay and Nipigon Fire Districts.
