False Information Leads To Big Fines

Two Canadians have been fined a total of $17-thousand for presenting false negative COVID-19 tests after returning from Mexico.

Transport Canada says the individuals boarded a flight to Canada in late January, knowing they had been diagnosed with COVID-19 just days before their journey.

The unidentified individuals were fined for presenting false COVID tests and for making a false declarations about their health status.

They are believed to be the first to be fined under the new travel restrictions imposed on air travellers.

Under the Interim Order Respecting Certain Requirements for Civil Aviation Due to COVID-19, travellers must obtain a negative test within 72 hours of boarding any flight inbound to Canada or proof of a positive test result within at least 14 days and no more than 90 days before arrival.

The results have to be presented to the plane’s aircrew before boarding.
