Evacuations Continue

The Chief of Pikangikum First Nation says nearly half of her communities 4,4000 residents have now been evacuated because of a nearby forest fire.

Amanda Sainnawap says they have concentrated their efforts on evacuating the most vulnerable including elders, children and families.

Residents have been moved to Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Timmins, Kapuskasing, Cochrane and Smooth Rock Falls.

Meantime, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says firefighters are making progress on the fire that has now burning over 3,800 of forest land.

Cool and damp weather helped in suppression efforts yesterday.

A total of 17 FireRanger crews, two attack crews and an incident management team have now been assigned to the blaze.

The fire is still listed as being not under control.
