Digital Fishing Tournament Planned For Rainy Lake

An online fishing tournament will be held on Rainy Lake later this month.

Anglers will still hit the water and search for the big ones.

Rainy River Future Development Corporation’s Geoff Gillon says the town’s working with web-based Anglers Atlas for the Explore Rainy Lake Digital Fishing Tournament.

“To fish in the tournament, you have to download the Anglers Atlas app. With that, you get a set of rules, and you’ll get a webinar where you use the app to take a picture of the fish,” says Gillon.

The event is the first of its kind for the Rainy River district.

Gillon says the goal is to get anglers, especially from out of town, to experience the lake.

“We’re promoting it as a fishing tournament, a catch and release tournament because we want to promote the ongoing value of the walleye fishery in Rainy Lake,” says Gillon.

There are prizes totalling $5,000 up for grabs in categories for both adults and young anglers.

The top prize is $750 for the longest-measured catch.

The fishing officially starts on August 13 and runs through to August 22.

There is a $25 fee, $10 for youth, to participate.
