Residents of International Falls have until the end of the year to get rid of their backyard chickens.
A May deadline was initially proposed, but it failed to find any support from city councillors this week.
Councillor Walt Buller says the practice has been illegal all along.
“They’ve already had chickens when there weren’t legal to have them in town. I think by giving them ’til the first of the year is enough time to get rid of the chickens,” says Buller.
Mayor Harley Droba preferred the spring deadline.
The deadline comes after voters rejected in November’s elections, chickens raised within city limits.
Fort Frances residents have had the ability to raise chickens in their backyards for several years.
