Cattle Farmers Facing ‘A Bit Of A Disaster’

Cattle farmers in the region are facing a problem.

Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP Marcus Powlowski says the closure of a major abattoir and packing plant in Toronto has backed up the whole system.

Powlowski says about 16,000 head of cattle are waiting to be slaughtered but are dying of heart attacks at feed lots in southern Ontario because they cannot be moved into the market.

Powlowski says that is causing a drop in prices from about $1,000 a head to $300 for farmers in this region causing them “economic hardship.”

He calls it “a bit of a disaster.”
