Careers, culture, and creativity

There’s plenty happening in Your Borderland over the next few weeks! You’ll have opportunities to explore new career paths, experience local history through food, and get creative with the kids. Here’s a look at what’s coming up.

Confederation College Education and Career Fair

Thursday, April 30 | 12:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Confederation College – Rainy River District Campus, Fort Frances

Confederation College’s Rainy River District Campus is hosting an Education and Career Fair designed to connect students, job seekers, and community members with educational and employment opportunities. Running from noon to 4:00 p.m., the fair offers attendees a chance to meet with employers, explore training programs, and learn more about career pathways available both locally and beyond.

The event is open to everyone, making it a valuable stop for those considering further education, planning a career change, or simply curious about what opportunities are available. Employers interested in participating can register by contacting the campus at 807‑274‑5395 or by emailing cristal.kinsman@confederationcollege.ca.

A Taste of Culture: History

Thursday, April 30 | 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Fort Frances Museum & Cultural Centre

Experience local history in a uniquely delicious way at “A Taste of Culture: History”, an evening that blends storytelling with a curated tasting menu inspired by the Rainy Lake region’s culinary past. Held at the Fort Frances Museum & Cultural Centre, this event invites guests to sample dishes that reflect the traditions, ingredients, and communities that helped shape the area.

Menu highlights include Polonaise from the historic Rainy Lake Hotel, wild rice casserole, 1904 baked cauliflower, Swedish meatballs, and baked doughnuts. Between tastings, participants will learn the stories behind each dish and gain insight into how food played an important role in everyday life — from hotel dining rooms to family kitchens.

Seating is limited, and advance reservations are required. Guests are asked to inform the Museum of any allergies or dietary needs at least one week prior to the event. Please note that all servings are standard adult portions, and children’s portions are not available.

Mother’s Day Cards for Kids

Thursday, May 7 | 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Fort Frances Museum & Cultural Centre

Kids are invited to get creative and make something heartfelt for Mom at the Mother’s Day Cards for Kids workshop. Led by Josie, this hands‑on activity encourages children to design and decorate their own custom Mother’s Day cards using provided materials.

No crafting experience is needed — just imagination and enthusiasm. The workshop offers a fun, relaxed environment where kids can express themselves while creating a keepsake Mom is sure to treasure. It’s a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day with creativity and thoughtfulness.
