Travel Restrictions Keep Border Crossings Down

Restrictions on travel continue to have an impact at the border.

The latest stats from Statistics Canada show a 95 per cent drop in the number of U.S. travellers passing the border in Fort Frances in February compared to last February.

There were 343 U.S. citizens crossing. One year ago, 65-hundred passed the Fort Frances border.

It’s a 98 per cent drop at the Rainy River border, with just 78 permitted to make their way into the district.

In February 2020, there were over 32-hundred US travellers.

A similar decline is seen at the Pigeon River border, south of Thunder Bay.

Eight-six Americans crossed into northwestern Ontario last month compared to the 14-hundred in February 2020.

U.S. citizens are only permitted entry into Canada for essential reasons.

As of February 22, all travellers, 5 and older, are now subject to COVID-19 testing and quarantine measures.
