Back to School

Most students will learn in a classroom for the first time since mid-April.

Education Director with the Rainy River District School Board Heather Campbell is happy to see them back with measures designed to keep students and staff safe.

“These guidelines this year are very similar to last year, with some, I think lessening or loosening of some of the preventive measures that were in place for reopening last year,” says Campbell.

Campbell says one of the keys to their reopening is supporting those students who struggled with online learning.

“We’re going to welcome back our students but prioritize their mental health and well-being as we know that those are key conditions for their ability to learn them to flourish.

Some students will continue with online learning to start, but Campbell says the number in the online school is far less than last year.

Schools have also gone through a bit of a refresh

Part of it included improving ventilation.

Manager of Plant Operations Travis Enge says high-efficiency units have gone into every kindergarten class where masking isn’t mandatory.

Enge says the board received in May 149 HEPA units for classes in schools that did not have energy recovery ventilation systems.
