Area woman charged with mail theft

A 56-year-old area woman is facing charges in connection with the theft of mail from the Fort Frances Post Office.

OPP say it was a complaint from Canada Post about a contract cleaner possibly stealing mail that led to the investigation.

Joined by Canada Post’s Security Investigation Services, the probe led police to a home in LaVallee township.

It was there that a quantity of stolen items were discovered, including gift cards, rebate coupons and parcels.

Police say they have been able to identify over 60 victims with the possibility of many more as they continue to investigate.

The woman was arrested on charges of theft from mail sent by post, possession of articles stolen from mail, theft over $5000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5000, and careless storage of a firearm.

She has since been released and is back in court at the end of January.
