Advisory Committee Meets In Dryden

Moose hunters in the area will finally get to have a say in future provincial population management decisions.

The Big Game Management Advisory Committee is hosting a public meeting today at the Best Western Plus in Dryden from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Camp operator Anita North is hoping for a big turnout, noting this is the first open forum that has been set up by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Dryden is the final stop on the six community tour.

North says a number of ideas and concerns can be brought up at the session, including the continuation of the calf harvest.

We are the only jurisdiction in North America that allows the calf species to be hunted when we are having a dramatic drop in the population,” says North.

North says the unfair system in which moose tags are allocated in the region also needs to be addressed.

The government says the goal is make life easier for Ontario hunters, while ensuring sustainable populations and continued hunting opportunities.
