Administration Recommends More Awareness Than Ban

A proposed ban on plastic shopping bags in Fort Frances is drawing some questions from Administration.

A report to the town’s planning and development committee identifies a number of unknowns it says still need further research.

They include the impact on existing recycling programs, retailers who provided bags to stores outside Fort Frances and enforcement.

It suggests the town follow Thunder Bay and Woodstock’s example of implementing awareness and educational campaigns rather than a ban.

The proposed ban put forward by Councillor Doug Judson will continue to be reviewed by two council committees this week.
