Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources says it will conduct its own environmental assessment of a controversial mining project once the company submits a proposal.
Twin Metals Minnesota is proposing the copper mine near Ely.
Opponents say it could be detrimental effects to the environment and surrounding waters that also flow into the Rainy Lake watershed.
Twin Metals is expected to submit its proposal next month.
The project will also undergo a federal environmental review.
