New Policing Contract To Be Finalized

Fort Frances town council is expected to sign off on a new five-year contract with the Ontario Provincial Police.

The new deal includes a provision for the OPP to hire two special constables who will handle court security, a task now performed by uniformed officers.

The move is expected to save the town money.

The estimated cost of the entire policing contract for 2020 is about $2.5 million.

It had been suggested the new contract start this month, but it was felt ending the current one early would not have been advantageous for the town.

Instead, it will start on January 1, 2020.

It comes before council at their meeting tonight.
