Local Sports For Monday, September 9

Tanner Williamson of Fort Frances was second in the mid-west modified feature run at Lake of the Woods Speedway in Kenora yesterday.

Dayton Brady of Devlin and Cody Ossachuk of Fort Frances were third and fourth respectively.

Williamson also raced at Superior, Wisconsin Friday and Saturday where he won an all-Canadian dash on Saturday.

He was also 6th in Saturday’s mid-west mod feature and 15th on Friday after winning B-features both nights to gain entry.

Wyatt Boyum of International Falls was 18th Saturday and 9th on Friday in the mains.

 

Fort Frances Lakers dropped both of their exhibition games over the weekend to the Dryden GM Ice Dogs.

The Lakers lost 6-3 at home Friday before falling 3-0 in Dryden on Saturday.

Nick Hahkala, MacKenzie Flett and Michael Chapman scored in Friday’s game.

 

Another planning meeting for next year’s Dudley Hewitt Cup in Fort Frances will take place next week.

It’s scheduled for September 19 at 6 p.m. at the Super 8.

Anyone who can lend a hand is encouraged to attend.

 

Rainy River Voyageurs women’s volleyball team went 1-2 at the Anoka-Ramsey Tournament Saturday.

They beat the host team 3-games to one before losing in straight games to St. Thomas and Bethel junior varsity clubs.

In the Anoka-Ramsey match, Hailee Barnard of Fort Frances recorded 10 kills, 5 ace serves, and 13 digs.

Teah Goulet of International Falls led the defense with 26 digs.

 

On the high school front, the International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team went 1-3 during a tournament at Greenway.

Their only win came against Northeast Range. They would lose to Cherry, Hill City, and Mountain Iron-Buhl all in straight games.

The Broncos football team defeated Deer River 36-14 in their home opener on Friday.

 

Fort Frances Tennis Club held a doubles tournament on Saturday with four teams playing a series of matches.

Al Cesunias of Dryden teamed with Al Christiansen of Fort Frances for the win.

Allan Albao and Clint Barton of Fort Frances were second.

The four teams also raised $55.00 for the club’s junior program.

 

Brian Gustafson and Breanne Becker won the Bassin’ for Bucks fishing tournament in Sioux Narrows.

Their three-day catch totalled almost 50 1/2 lbs.

That beat runners-up and last year’s champions Jeff Gustafson and his wife Shelby, who reeled in almost 48 lbs.
