Keewaywin Fires Not Under Control

Two fires near the community of Keewaywin continue to spread.

One fire just six kilometres southwest of the First Nation grew to 40,000 hectares yesterday, while the almost 72,000 hectare fire 8 kilometres south of Keewaywin spread to the east.

The fires remain out of control.

A 23,000 hectare fire 40 kilometres north of Red Lake is also not under control.

Officials with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry say the forest fire hazard is high with areas of extreme hazard in the Red Lake and Sioux Lookout districts.

Meanwhile, those forest fires are causing a haze of smoke that’s prompting air quality warnings from Environment Canada for the Kenora, Dryden, Fort Frances, and Sioux Lookout areas.

There are 18 active fires in the Northwest.
