Local Sports Report For Monday, April 15

Northern Storm 14 and under team, that includes players from the Fort Frances area, were winners of their division at a AAA girl’s hockey tournament held in Duluth.

They beat Tommy Chicago Black 5-4 in overtime with Isabelle Taylor of Fort Frances notching a goal in the game.

The Northern Storm 12 and under team won their division as well with a 3-1 win over the Ice Cougars.

The Northwestern Ontario Stingers 10 and under team placed 5th in theirs with a 5-3 win over the Hooligans.

Marlee Bliss scored a pair for the Stingers.

 

A Fort Frances-based AAA triple novice boys team, playing as the Rainy Lake Royals, went winless at a tournament in Winnipeg.

They ended with a 14-1 loss to the Manitoba Chiefs yesterday.

 

Fort Frances Girls-Women’s Hockey Association recognized top players at its awards banquet yesterday.

Gianna Gushulak, Jorja Guertin, Emma Wilson, Davilyhn Miller, Rayna Whitefish, Emma Bodnarchuk, Julia Guertin, Piper Miller, Shay Mannassau, Monika Ruppenstein and Ziggy Skead won MVP honours.

Eight bursaries were also awarded to graduating players.

Last weeks storm cancelled the Rainy River Voyageurs baseball and softball games from the weekend.

International Falls Broncos softball and baseball openers were also cancelled as will be golf team’s first tournament in Duluth tomorrow.
