LaVerendrye emergency department to stay open

Riverside Health Care states that it has successfully averted a potential closure of the emergency department at LaVerendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances.

Riverside indicated Sunday that emergency services could be impacted for 12 hours beginning Wednesday evening.

It now reports that all services will continue to operate as usual.

” We remain dedicated to ensuring care and services continue across our district in collaboration with our partners,” Riverside states in a release.

“We would like to thank everyone involved, including our dedicated team members who worked diligently on contingency planning to ensure minimal service disruptions, as well as our local and regional partners for their support and collaboration.”

The reason behind the potential disruption was not disclosed.

Riverside contended with emergency department closures at Rainy River Health Centre last year, caused by the resignation of the community’s three doctors.

This forced the ER to shut down for almost 90 hours over five days in early June before Riverside secured locums to reopen.
