No one was hurt after several rail cars carrying canola seed derailed west of Fort Frances on Saturday, according to fire officials.
The derailment happened in the township of La Vallee between Highway 613 South and Lavallee Road South, according to a social media post from Chapple, Emo and La Vallee Fire and Emergency Services.
Firefighters put out several small spot fires between the two sections of train, said the post.
The department said no injuries were reported and there is no danger to the public at this time.
A spokesperson for CN later confirmed the incident happened around 2:10 p.m. Saturday.
“Preliminary reports indicate that loaded grain cars derailed causing a small brush fire on site,” Ashley Michnowski wrote in an email to our newsroom on Saturday evening.
In an update on Sunday morning, Michnowski confirmed that 13 cars were involved, but no hazardous materials were spilled.
She added that crews worked through the night to clear the cars and repair track infrastructure.
While all public crossings have since reopened, the track remains closed until further notice.
