National Park Services employee dies in Voyageurs National Park

A park ranger has died at Voyageurs National Park.

Park officials say the ranger was responding to a distressed vessel on Namakan Lake.

While towing the vessel late Sunday morning, the National Park Service’s boat capsized, sending four people into the lake.

Three were able to swim to safety, but the ranger was unaccounted for.

Their body was recovered following a three-hour search involving the National Park Service, the United States Border Patrol, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and the Kabetogama Fire Department.

The victim’s name has not yet been released.

The incident remains under investigation, but park officials say strong winds and rough water were reported at the time.
