Meeting about bridge planned for next month

The rise in bridge tolls is leading to the forming of a meeting of area political leaders.

Kenora Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford and Fort Frances Mayor Andrew Hallikas say they are forming a multi-level table to discuss the hike in tolls on the International Bridge between Fort Frances and International Falls.

The increase takes effect on Wednesday.

The meeting is scheduled for November 7.

It will include political leaders from both sides of the border and Indigenous leadership.

“As leaders, we have an obligation to advocate for constituents on matters that affect their household budgets,” says Rickford in a statement. “We welcome Aazhogan LP’s willingness to further dialogue.”

Hallikas says it is essential to provide a forum for all stakeholders to come together and discuss a path forward.

“The International Bridge is a critical economic and community link, connecting the town of Fort Frances and the city of International Falls. It binds not just two communities but the entire Borderland region together.”
