Fire near Wabaseemoong declared out

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services Branch says staff have extinguished a small fire near Wabaseemoong Independent Nation.

Kenora Fire #1 was first reported on May 1 and had grown to 0.2 hectares in size by May 3, was declared out yesterday by the Ministry.

That makes Sioux Lookout Fire #1 the sole active forest fire in the region. The 1.0 hectare fire is listed as under control about 17 kilometers east of Sioux Lookout, and was discovered on May 3.

At this time, the MNRF says high wildland fire hazard conditions exist throughout all or parts of Kenora, Dryden, Fort Frances, Red Lake and Sioux Lookout – with moderate to low conditions in the Thunder Bay area.

Residents are reminded to always follow Outdoor Burning Regulations. To report a fire, call 310-FIRE to dial 911.
