Committee recommends waiving rental fees

A committee of Fort Frances council is okay with waiving rental fees for the Memorial Sports Centre’s auditorium for a Drag show.

Borderland Pride is staging the event in support of the splash park project.

It is scheduled for June 10.

Borderland Pride wrote the town asking that the $813 rental fees for the auditorium and stage be considered as a donation.

Councillor Mike Behan says given that it is a fundraiser, he supports the town by covering the rental costs.

“Certainly, the town needs the revenue from renting our facilities. But in this specific case, when they are offering to donate the proceeds from their event to the splash park, which is a very important community initiative, if we charge them $813 for the rental, that’s $813 less donate to the splash park,” says Behan.

Mayor Andrew Hallikas also supports the town waiving the rental charges.

“I think Borderland Pride does some great work in our community. Every year they designate June as Pride Month. In the past month, they managed to get a historical plaque placed here to honour two significant Fort Frances residents. And I love the fact that they’re going to donate the proceeds of this to the splash park. So 100% support for me on this,” says Hallikas

Administration suggests using the town’s public relations fund to offset the cost.

Council will discuss the recommendation from the Community Services Executive Committee next week.
