It doesn’t look like it outside, but the fire season has officially started.
It began this past Saturday, April 1.
Minaki Fire Chief Robert Creedon says the fire season means a couple of things people should be aware of.
“You have the day burning ban,” explains Creedon.
“But when you look at the fire season, you got to remember you fire departments are not just doing fires, we also do motor vehicle accidents and in Kenora, they also take people off the ice. We are busy all year round even when it’s not fire season.”
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry points out that about 50 percent of Ontario wild fires are human caused.
Last year was a very quiet year for MNRF forest fire fighters, with only 268 wildfires reported across the whole province, well below the 10 year average.
