Prescribed burns planned for Voyageurs Nat’l Park

Voyageurs National Park is taking steps to get rid of floating and rooted hybrid cattails this spring.

Several prescribed burns are planned for this month and next in Rainy Lake and Kabetogamma Lake.

Burning will be conducted during daylight hours and will likely generate a lot of smoke.

Park officials note that hybrid cattails have been a real problem, invading about 200 hectares and impacting native plants such as wild rice, rushes and native cattail.

The burns will occur in and near Black Bay Narrows, Cranberry Bay, and Alder Creek in Rainy Lake.

Others in Kabetogama Lake are scheduled at Tom Cod, Irwin, and Daley Bays.

The public is asked to stay away from those areas during the burning.
