Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke to Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford regarding the ever-growing attention over the province’s use of the notwithstanding clause to force CUPE education workers to not strike on Nov. 4.
Trudeau said in a release that Ford knows the clause is “wrong and inappropriate.”
The Prime Minister emphasized the critical importance of standing up for Canadians’ rights and freedoms, including workers’ rights. He was clear that the preemptive use of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms’ notwithstanding clause is wrong and inappropriate, and should only ever be used in the most exceptional of circumstances.
The release from the Prime Minister was short and only indicated that they also spoke about other recent investments in Ontario.
