Influenza Confirmed in Parts of District

The Northwestern Health Unit is confirming the presence of influenza in some areas of its catchment area.

Cases are identified in the Sioux Lookout, Kenora and Atikokan areas.

The Health Unit is anticipating more cases elsewhere.

Symptoms usually include fever, chills and shakes, headache, muscle aches, sore throat, cough, extreme fatigue, and sometimes nasal or sinus congestion.

Some people, especially children, also experience vomiting and diarrhea.

The Health Unit says influenza is a respiratory infection that can feel similar to COVID-19 or a bad cold, but unlike a bad cold, it can be severe to some and lead to hospitalization.

It says protecting yourself, slowing the spread and protecting others is the best defence.

It starts with getting the flu shot.

Anyone 6 months old and up is eligible. You get the shot at participating pharmacies, medical clinics or at a health unit clinic.

It also advises that if you are ill, don’t go to school or work and stay home until you are free of symptoms for at least 24 hours, longer if you experience vomiting and diarrhea.

Avoid visiting hospitals or long-term care homes.

The health unit also suggests wearing a mask in public for at least ten days if someone in your home is sick to avoid spread to others.

Call Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000 or your health care provider if you have severe symptoms and seek emergency care if you are having difficulty breathing.
